Learning Math with Technology
Spring 2012
E. Kim, R. Putnam
An exploration in mathematics as well as its relation to technology through the eyes of the NCTM standards was largely the focus of this course. It covered math content and pedagogy through reading, discussion, and much reflection. We were able to problem solve and discuss some situations our students may encounter in the realm of mathematics as well as create an online resource library to revisit and utilize in the future.

By unabashedly tackling technology and its relationship to pedagogy, this course helped to facilitate a deeper understanding of TPACK. Throughout the course we created documents that forced us to assume a leadership role in technology implementation. The Sustainable Technology project, for example, required us to fill a gap in technology in self funding manner.

By approaching writing from two directions, this class allowed us to better understand our students as writers. We were immersed in writing (completing and discussing creative writing pieces) and also learning about it's place in the classroom. For my final project in this course I researched and wrote about emergent writing development and its classroom implications. This was something very important and useful to me as a kindergarten teacher.

While focusing on multiple instructional strategies in this course we were able to see ways to most effectively meet the literacy needs of all types of students. We took a look at students of many ages, student who struggle, and ESL students. This course culminated in an in depth literacy learner analysis wherein it was required to take an in depth look at the background, motivations, and learning of one student.

Planning for improved learning and communication, mainly with regard to technology was the focus of this course. We took a thorough look at a video by RSA Animate about networks and how they affect our lives. We also had the opportunity to write about our instructional dream - focusing on what we would love to see of all of the barriers we encounter each day were nonexistent.

A focus on literacy and the implementation of a balanced program was the main goal of TE 842. Through the creation of professional development plans and real-world reading memos we took somewhat-theoretical literacy information and applied it to our particular teaching and learning situations.

Through taking a close look at different forms of inquiry this class helped me to see how they pertain to education and learning. The most impactful, for me, was looking at Vivian Paley's narrative inquiry in the book The Girl with the Brown Crayon. Paley's immersed inquiry method was easy to identify with as she learned about her kindergarten students by being with them day in and day out and reflecting just as often. We also looked at the movie Whale Rider in a unique way, writing from the point of view of an anthropologist, discovering what was happening as if we were involved in it. This course focused on inquiry very broadly and yet was quite in-depth at the same time.

We really got our hands dirty in this course with its heavy focus on new technology and how it could best be utilized. It seemed that every week we were testing a new way to display what we were learning about how technology can affect learning. Through the use of online services like popplet, glogster, and dozens of other tech tools we were able to learn more about what the web had to offer and how we could use this to better get information and understanding to students.

A thorough investigation of what makes literary works worthy of being given awards or considered classics was conduced during this course. Throughout the semester we were able to take a close look at award winning or nominated books and have thought provoking discussions about how they won or even whether they deserved the distinctions. We also looked at classic literature by reading and watching two versions of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. Comparing the book and film versions as they changed over time provided insight into what make a classic work of literature.

The product of this course is the portfolio you are viewing now. It was a synthesis of all the learning that took place during the MATC program. Through the use of technology we were able to reflect on and display our coursework in a truly useful medium. This work will be able to be shared with parents, students, and current and future employers.
